6 Easy Ways to Puppy-Proof Your Yard

Scott Marks

If the new addition to your family has four legs, floppy ears and a wagging tail, then you’re in for a treat! A new puppy brings joy and laughter to any home, but they can also be a lot of work – especially when it comes to puppy-proofing your yard. From escape-proofing your perimeter and removing harmful plants to installing artificial grass specially for dogs and adding extra sources of shade, there are lots of ways to make your yard the perfect safe haven for your new furry friend. Follow these simple tips from SYNLawn Carolina to puppy-proof your yard.

#1: Install Fencing

It’s important to make sure your fence is high enough to keep your puppy inside once he grows up. For medium to large dog breeds, the minimum height is six feet. Keep this in the back of your mind when puppy-proofing your back-yard. Be sure to walk the perimeter of your yard and take note of any spaces small enough for your pup to squeeze through. Your puppy will be able to slip through spaces much smaller than you think, so if you have any doubt, patch it up. Be aware of any fence posts, decorative pieces or places where the fence top is uneven. These can prove hazardous should your dog’s collar catch on them while jumping. Additionally, you may want to add paver stone or concrete to the base of the fence to prevent your pal from digging under the fence in pursuit of excitement outside of your yard.

#2: Upgrade Your Gates

When addressing your gate system, it’s a good idea to install self-closing hinges to keep your gate from being accidentally left open. To deter pet thieves, consider installing locks on your gates so they can’t be opened by anyone other than family members. If you have maintenance workers or landscapers that need access to your yard, you will want to let them know that you have a dog so they can take extra caution when entering the area. In many cases, it may be best to keep your pet inside on days when you’re expecting strangers to work in your yard. If you are still unsure, it might be best for you to escort them into your yard so you can be certain your puppy doesn’t make a run for it and to help your pet get used to the newcomers.

#3: Cover Your Crawl Space

Many older homes, tract housing and mobile homes have crawl spaces that can be easily used by a pet for an escape. If your home has a crawl space, take caution and seal it off properly so you know your pup can’t use it to get out or find other mischief.

#4: Secure Exposed Wiring

Exposed wiring can be dangerous to both puppies and people alike. In your initial backyard assessment, make sure you address any exposed wiring that your puppy may want to chew on. Types of wiring to look for include cable wires, sprinkler wire and outdoor lighting cables. All of these types of wiring can be potentially dangerous and even fatal if your puppy gets them in his mouth.

#5: Consider Artificial Grass

To avoid dangerous chemicals and pesticides, it might be time to consider an artificial turf installation. Prevent mud muddles, grass stains and digging with artificial grass designed specifically to withstand the rough and tumble play of any size and breed of dog. Plus, with an easy-to-clean surface, a drainage rate of 30 inches per hour, and special odor-neutralizing infill, you can rest assured your lawn will benefit more than just your furry friend – it’s an investment the whole family can enjoy! An industry-leading pet turf manufacturer and installer, SYNLawn can help you create the perfect lawn for your rambunctious new pet. Your yard will not only look fantastic year around, but your new family member will remain clean, happy and safe while exploring his new yard, as well.

If your yard is not large enough for a full lawn or if you like the look of your current landscaping, we recommend installing a dog run. It combines the safe quality of artificial grass with a large enough area for your pet to get the exercise he needs.

#6: Prepare Your Pool

If you have a pool in your backyard, it’s time to use extra caution. Most dogs love water and will use any chance to play in it. Consider installing a fence around your pool. In the event that your dog does get into the pool area, having a way for them to get out of the water is essential. Stairs and beach entry pools will ensure that your puppy has a safe exit strategy.

Bringing a pet into your life is an exciting and challenging time, but using these tips will make that transition much easier and stress-free. You don’t even have to worry about installing your own synthetic grass in Charlotte because at SYNLawn Carolina, we can do it for you. Contact us today to get your free on-site consultation!

The Marks Family are true professionals. Answer calls/texts immediately. They treated my home like it was there own. They also hold their employees to the same standard. Clean and efficient, when they left it was like (other than the job) they were never there.

We can’t say enough about the great service and products from Southeast Turf! From the first meeting to the installation, they were great to deal with. Not to mention how awesome my yard looks. I think several of my neighbors are going to have it done as well because they too were impressed! Thank you!!

I had a small fenced in area off our patio that our dogs used. Southeast Turf installed artificial grass and it looks great. The team showed up on time and did a great job. They are booked out for a few months because they are in high demand. We love our new dog area. No more dirty dog feet, no more digging and no more smell!!
